Ran across this in the Inquirer. I have to admit, it made me think. It might do the same to you.

Forgetting Christ in a manger

Close this In these hard times, many still continue to flaunt their wealth even in this season of seasons. How scandalous to see houses of the “haves” extravagantly/ostentatiously decorated all over, with Christmas lights and decor in and out! The image of our Savior born in a humble manger is replaced with those of Santa Claus and other characters. This is the image that is being instilled in many young minds come Christmastime.
If the intention for such grand display is to bring cheer to the poor, it is, I believe, a misplaced sense of goodwill. For they create among the poor feelings of envy, jealousy, self-pity and even hurt feelings toward God for not blessing them just as much.
Jesus chose to be born poor and lived humbly. His message to us men is clear: Live simply, avoid excesses, moderate your greed. Let us celebrate Christmas more in the revelry of the spirit than in perishable mundane things.
