Conflict of Interest The PBA and the CFL
I don't like the Philippine Basketball Association. Why? Like anything in life, when you are the only game in town, people will overlook your flaws. Since you are the only game in town then you have little incentive to fix your flaws. The PBA with its flaws is an accurate microcosm of the flawed pinoy. It's all about being astig and not about being proper and ethical.
Basketball is the only team sport that Filipinos generally care about . There are a few scattered hotbeds of football/ soccer around the country but insignificant in the national scene. Today's lesson boys and girls is about a concept known as conflict of interest.
"We can define a conflict of interest as a situation in which a person has a private or personal interest sufficient to appear to influence the objective exercise of his or her official duties as, say, a public official, an employee, or a professional."
http://www.businessethics.ca/definitions/conflict-of-interest.html
The fact that this exists in the dominant sports league in this country speaks volumes of how people here do not think. The gambling problem here can be defined as serious. Yet no one questions conflict of interest in the PBA? I would question it except I don't care. Well sorry I do care. My girlfriend's sideline is entirely funded by gambling on the PBA. Would you consider that a conflict in interest?
If you want a very short explanation of how bad conflict of interest can be to the integrity of sports listen to the two minute clip I just heard about how this exists in another bush league that I am somewhat familiar with. The Canadian Football League. Like anything in life, you cut corners or you compromise ethics when you are desperate. The fact that the league has to rely on one businessman to own teams in the two biggest English speaking cities in Canada says volumes of overall lack of financial interest and overall interest.
I guarantee you this will be the only piece you will ever see comparing the CFL with the PBA. I lived in a CFL city for 19 years. I used to save up my earnings as a newspaper boy to watch Joe Papao and Larry Key do their thing in Empire Stadium. I bought my car stereo from Larry Crawford in 1988. I played for the BC Lions 1982-1984 (trombone in their marching band). I was at the 1985 BC Lions parade on West Georgia and getting some joy seeing AL Wilson (center) hold on to the cup. I constantly followed the local sports scene through the Vancouver Sun and CKNW radio in the previous century. The CFL as a league and team by team did everything in it's power to look as undignified as possible. Examples I can remember.
1) In their version of jumping the shark, the CFL expanded south of the border in the mid nineties. Four teams. One of them in Las Vegas, a place where self respecting leagues do not go for whatever ramifications they foresee. Granted you have to be significant to have ramifications so the CFL gets a pass. This experiment of Frankenstein proportions lasted two seasons. In what real league does an expansion team finish third place in the end of season point total? Baltimore did it their inaugural year. In Baltimore's second year they won the whole thing. Then the team vanished. What real league has a champion make like D.B. Cooper? The year after Baltimore won the CFL championship. The league circumcised all four American based teams then adopted a new slogan "Radically Canadian!". The CFL is so indecisive they make Brett Favre look like Solomon.
2) This example I am going entirely off memory. I see no evidence of it in Google. Sometime in the mid eighties in an effort to boost sagging attendance the league (CFL) wanted Bryan Adams to play a half time show in every CFL stadium for free. They wanted to claim it was his patriotic duty. That traumatized me the way any kind of grovelling will traumatize you. To see an entity with no sense of self worth begging. I would have better luck asking Ines de la Fressange for a date and insisting she pay.
3) In my years when I followed the league there was a regular annual ritual. Some of the CFL players will forgo a guaranteed roster spot in their CFL team for a shot at making an NFL team. Football is brutal on your body no matter what level you play it at. Might as well get paid well for it. Those that do not make it to an NFL roster usually reapply to the CFL team that has their rights. I remember this enraged a guy called Cal Murphy. "How dare these guys treat the CFL as a consolation prize?" Well Cal, in terms of money and prestige it is.
The PBA and CFL seem to have a lot in common. They should have mutual "brainstorming sessions" since they seem to hold the same values or lack of them.

Carabao NBA
Janina San MiguelCarabao NBA
The only team sport Filipinos as a whole understand is basketball. It is the only team sport the typical Filipino male will pay attention to. They all understand 5 guys who can all shoot , rebound, pass the ball. You can check out this previous post of mine. I have been watching the playoffs this year at home on the weekends or when I can sneak into an office with the tv already tuned into the game during office hours. Why the network here showing the game feels they have to impose local commentators on this game are beyond me. If I want that style of commenting I will watch the PBA broadcasts. But I don't. Let's say they really have to do this cause there is a gun to their head. We are a land of call centers. The times I listen to FM radio many of the on air personalities speak English well enough. The play by play guy they have is decent. WHY is the color guy horrible??? In this land there must be some guy who knows basketball and can speak semi competent English. If they sent guys who only speak tagalog and show the game on a channel with mostly tagalog shows I have no problem with that. Just leave the cable feed that had the TNT crowd doing all the duties as far as the conference finals, leave that feed alone. Why in the most significant series do we get a color commentator who would have difficulty passing an ESL course? Watch the video (last 3 minutes of Game 4) so you can not see I am not making the blooper list up.
"Its better to be lacky than good" "These Are the Playoffs!" No SH*T Sherlock. Not only is it the playoffs , its the finals. Anybody who did not know we already witnessed three previous rounds of playoff basketball can't really care about basketball. "This is the team with no quitting in them" "Although Gasuul is not a 3 point shooter." "Making them booth contenders again" I think the color commentator was the guy who made this sign.
You could not in a million years be proud of this guy. Ed

Reality of why the Philippines is nowhere near a medal as of now
I really really hope this is my last Olympics rant. We will just do this all again in 2012. Or until I see something I strongly disagree with, which happens about every five minutes.
Something about my job. One of my functions is to teach our new employees , some fresh out of college how to comprehend our service process. To help me do that I resort to real life and examples they can relate to. I use fast food and I use basketball and relate the realities there to the realities of our Service process and even our revenue stream.
I will attempt to do that and explain why the Philippines is not world class in terms of Olympic competition.
Let's take your typical production facility of world class items. Top of the line products. It can be coffee, it can be shoes or it can be luxury cars. The end product has to surpass or be in the top 3 of anything else like it in the world.
Before anything happens there has to be a world class design (plan). In that plan you foresee the practical application of the following things.
1) Raw Materials - for a world class product not just anything has to do , you need quality material to start with. Sometimes quality can only be achieved by going through numbers. Like eliminating about 99.99 % of what you have access to. Whether it's coffee beans or leather for the shoes, you just have to have good stuff to start with. Bringing in huge quantities gives you the luxury of being choosy.
2) You have to have an elite production/ refinement process- To be the best in the world , raw material is not enough, but what you do with it is part of the equation. Look at what goes into the production of a BMW or a Rolls Royce or a Bentley.
Olympic medalists are not that much different except when humans are involved, what gets them through the weeding out process is motivation and desire. You can't make the same case for coffee beans.
Part of the motivation of being good at something is the prestige that comes with being the best . Like I have said many times before this society only values basketball in terms of a competitive event. Even with something we value we don't do well internationally. What more with events we do not value??? And these are events that are only relevant once every few years. The Filipino sports psyche is fascinating if you examine the PBA. There are three chances a year to be "champions". This lends itself to instant gratification. There is no big off season wait for the finality to sink in. When raised with that mentality, hard to imagine a lot of people training 4 plus years for one event.
I asked my long time sports buddy from the old Philippine Stock Exchange Alan Araullo (Regina Capital) and asked him if anybody even questioned that one third of the PBA's 10 teams was owned by one conglomerate. His answer was in the negative. With that kind of non critical eye towards competition in the one pro league in the only team sport that matters in this country no wonder we don't go anywhere . In a world of game fixing, gambling and conclusion in sport , having one third of a league owned by the same group should at least be questioned but it is not. I suspect that the powers that be such as they are feel they are lucky to have that kind of sponsorship and should that go away it will start a domino effect that may see the PBA enter an era of chaos.
Seinfeld once said that sports fans essentially cheer for laundry since players in the age of free agency move from one team to another with no roots. But at least the "laundry" is rooted in one place with essentially the same set of fans for half their games. In the PBA , there is no sense of geography to base your loyalties on but the sponsors themselves. Well that works for this league. Not only are you not cheering for laundry but for commercials. Weird if you think about it.
No such thing as a home team . The market has to have some other way of determining loyalty since the teams are basically just advertising . Imagine race car drivers like Juan Montoya or Jeff Gordon have ads all over themselves and their cars. In the PBA the ads happen to be worn by humans. Yes folks, reality.
When you have access to a lot of talented athletes all wanting the same thing, you will likely end up with an elite 1% . This 1% all started out coming out of an ultra competitive region then the best of the region got to compete nationally which is another pressure cooker.
So essentially I just want to explore the roots of sports and consciousness in this country and why it leads to such a sense of entitlement despite no competitive world class development program. Despite very few serious athletes that embrace sports that don't have a hoop ten feet off the ground.
OK, so now I described a real production process and I generalized what goes into producing an elite athlete. Do you really think the Philippines can be in the top 3 of any Olympic event against the best of the rest of the world? Can our pressure cooker process in any event compete with even the Top 20? The way I see it, we don't have the numbers or desire to compete in a lot of these events. But we sure as hell want the glory and attention that comes with winning. No wonder this society is as corrupt as it is. Our society has proved it only knows and cares about basketball. Our society does not motivate the numbers to excel in anything athletic outside of basketball. Then every four years they complain about no medals. You probably heard this saying 7843 times: "You will reap what you sow". Why is everybody in this country so surprised at our reaping ( or lack of it) when we really don't do any sowing??
Ed
