At Least No Fictional Character Ever Said The Pinoy ain't got no humanity.

satire

–noun
1.     the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.
2.     a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.
3.     a literary genre comprising such compositions.

If you want to see a Filipino excited over something other than a Manny fight. Show them a comedy that mentions or depicts a Filipino. Then all these sensitive people with too much time want to protest their nation's "portrayal"  in a comedy or satire.

Now for all of you that have ever felt persecuted by the Desperate Housewives one liner of the Med School or Chip Tsao ( who I guarantee you have all never heard of before that incident) or the that British Comedy with the pinay maid. Please put yourselves in the shoes of the contemporary German.
Listen to Brad Pitt's speech in the movie. He talks about killing Germans. He says they have no humanity. He talks about being cruel. He talks about disfigured bodies. To one and only one nationality. The Germans. A far cry from a line in a sitcom about a medical school dont cha think? When you compare the Pinay maid to what happens in Inglourious Basterds, at least she has humanity.
But did you read or hear about Germans spending one nano second protesting this? Any boycotts called for Tarantino or Brad Pitt? Did any Filipino watching this movie feel the need to protect the dignity of the German people? Or do they think it's OK to mock other races not just the Pinoy race. Which country Germany or the Philippines has a lot more going on in terms of economic progress? Which country is more literate? Which country has better self esteem? These are just questions I have to ask.

While we are on the topic of cinema and people taking fiction and satire way too seriously let me tell you about a local example. Pinoy on Pinoy crime if you will. Back in 2001 there was a movie called The Red Diaries. Which is a blatant rip off of the Zalman King/ David Duchovny Red Shoe Diaries. I bring this up because think of all the crime dramas you have ever seen in your life. Whether its the Untouchables or Miami Vice or Godfather or the Sopranos. You will always see corrupt cops.
So it surprised me that the Philippine National Police made a big stink about corrupt cops being depicted in the movie Red Diaries. When I was taking up Marketing Management at LSGSB , Professor Perlas brought in the Public Relations Officer for the PNP. I asked him why the organization was so against that depiction in a fictional movie. I can not remember 7 years later his exact words though I can quote this exact phrase "tama na". What he meant by that was that we had enough , please stop it. But corrupt cops exist in real life and in reel life. It is not unique to our culture so what gives them the moral high ground to wish it would not be depicted in movies. They want a cinematic world where all cops live off their salary and keep their marriage vows sacred and do not deal drugs. That kind of film genre is called science fiction.  Remember that the next time you see traffic enforcement stop private cars so that they can be bribed while jeepney drivers who defy the law of gravity can keep on keeping on.
So the next time a bunch of pinoys complain about pinoy portrayal  in some foreign comedy, please remember the following:
a) All pinoys behave with utter dignity and  completely have no flaws so no use portraying them as anything short of that.
b) pinoy humor is completely high brow so please remember that if you decide to put them in your sitcom. They totally understand satire and eschew slapstick.
c) Filipinos do not have an iota of racism in them. They treat every race on the face of the earth as equal brothers. They would appreciate it if you did the same. It is easier to find a jeepney driver named Svend than it is to find a racist Filipino.

d) Finally the Philippines is a feminist utopia. Every single political, social and commercial institution here treats all the women of this land with respect and dignity. This  is specially true in all the tourist trap areas and high end hotels. So the typical Filipino can not comprehend why the BBC show Harry and Paul would portray a pinay maid in such a fashion.

e) If you take bullets a-d seriously and at face value please download the famous words of Charlie Brown in the Multiply version of this post as made popular by
Eric Karabell, Jay Soderberg and Peter Pascarelli

Adolf Hitler: [slamming his hand on a table] Nein nein nein nein nein nein!

Lt. Aldo Raine: My name is Lt. Aldo Raine and I'm putting together a special team, and I need me eight soldiers. Eight Jewish-American soldiers. Now, y'all might've heard rumors about the armada happening soon. Well, we'll be leaving a little earlier. We're gonna be dropped into France, dressed as civilians. And once we're in enemy territory, as a bushwhackin' guerrilla army, we're gonna be doin' one thing and one thing only... killin' Nazis. Now, I don't know about y'all, but I sure as hell didn't come down from the goddamn Smoky Mountains, cross five thousand miles of water, fight my way through half of Sicily and jump out of a fuckin' air-o-plane to teach the Nazis lessons in humanity. Nazi ain't got no humanity. They're the foot soldiers of a Jew-hatin', mass murderin' maniac and they need to be dee-stroyed. That's why any and every every son of a bitch we find wearin' a Nazi uniform, they're gonna die. Now, I'm the direct descendant of the mountain man Jim Bridger. That means I got a little Injun in me. And our battle plan will be that of an Apache resistance. We will be cruel to the Germans, and through our cruelty they will know who we are. And they will find the evidence of our cruelty in the disemboweled, dismembered, and disfigured bodies of their brothers we leave behind us. And the German won't not be able to help themselves but to imagine the cruelty their brothers endured at our hands, and our boot heels, and the edge of our knives. And the German will be sickened by us, and the German will talk about us, and the German will fear us. And when the German closes their eyes at night and they're tortured by their subconscious for the evil they have done, it will be with thoughts of us they are tortured with. Sound good?
The Basterds: YES, SIR!
Lt. Aldo Raine: That's what I like to hear. But I got a word of warning for all you would-be warriors. When you join my command, you take on debit. A debit you owe me personally. Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps. And I want my scalps. And all y'all will git me one hundred Nazi scalps, taken from the heads of one hundred dead Nazis. Or you will die tryin'.

Lt. Aldo Raine: You probably heard we ain't in the prisoner-takin' business; we in the killin' Nazi business. And cousin, Business is a-boomin'.

PNoy Proposed Prayer Vigil Preposterous Presumes Privilege is Pseudo Patriotic and Prostitutes Piety

Let me get this straight. Our country does not put away people for crimes like drug smuggling and murder. China does. Their system seems to work and we are supposed to pray that it doesn't just because pinoys are involved. It's not an issue of of guilt or justice anymore it's racism. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20110218-320968/DZIQ-Aquino-calls-for-national-prayer-vigil Feb 21, '11 6:52 AM

Why doesn't Noynoy ask for a national prayer vigil so the Lord can give him some brains. Maybe even Noynoy knows there are somethings beyond the control of the Lord.

Here is a radical idea. Instead of praying for the lives of drug smugglers to be spared. Why not pray for wisdom that people do not smuggle, sell or use illegal drugs? http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20110218-320968/DZIQ-Aquino-calls-for-national-prayer-vigil Feb 18, '11 7:05 PM

Laws are laws and rules are rules and drugs are drugs and guilty is guilty . Who cares if a Filipino gets caught in a foreign country breaking their rules??? Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. No excuses. No pampering under the guise of nationality.

http://twitter.com/edrlopez

If you have seen the above quotes before it's because they were previously published in my Twitter, FB, Multiply Notes etc. What Noynoy is saying by this is because you are Pinoy , accident of birth then you deserve not to be dealt with by the laws of the foreign lands that you go to. Just because you are Filipino you don't have to be accountable for your actions. The laws do not apply to you. Or at least not to their fullest extent.

Whenever you encounter a head scratcher in life always consider the source. Here is guy who did nothing to earn his position. His position happens to be the highest elected office in the land. I have summed up his uselessness in one sentence: take away his last name and what do you got? All this guy is off spring of people that represents romantic history to much of the voting public and not much else. Whatever there was of it back then I doubt he is creating now or will ever create. All the guy does is wear yellow, make the "L" sign with his hand and talk about his parents. He does not have the credentials to manage a Burger King. Nobody not even his fans ever cite anything he has done in Congress or the Senate except ask for money. Face it, that's what your twelve year old does.

Prayer means many things to many different people. I might as well talk about what it means to me. If you think God is important and supreme and I do then what you pray for should be important. Four days ago I was told something I found very profound by somebody who is 89 years old. She really makes it a point to kneel even a little bit in front of her statue of the Lord when she prays. She is right. Something about that external acknowledgment that adds some power to it. If you agree with my point that God should be respected and the way to show that respect is to avoid frivolous things when to pray, I will define for me what is frivolous:
  • praying for preferential treatment in terms of a single race and not action.
  • praying for victory in any sort of artificial contest that is merely meant to entertain.
  • praying for victory in any sort of artificial contest that is merely meant to entertain in terms of a single race.
  • praying for personal gain in an effort to compensate for lack of effort.

For my other thoughts on prayer you may look here.

Yes there is a separation of Church and State. There also should be a separation between prayer and indulgence. I love certain spectator sports but never once have I prayed for outcomes of sporting events. I have seen starving children living in squalor and they deserved prayer more than the Washington Redskins.

As much as I mock Noynoy's Prayer Vigil , it is still very indicative of the culture I live in. Can be summed up in four words: "Basta Pinoy Da Best" . It explains the hysteria in this country for anything Manny, Charice, Arnel, Azkals etc. It does not matter if you don't appreciate a particular field of endeavor but if a Pinoy is involved then suddenly you should be an expert at it. I know many relatives who even in their 20s and 30s play or coach organized soccer. Those people represent the .0002 % of pinoys who recently cheered on the Azkals that watched more than 10 minutes of soccer back in 2009. They do not appreciate soccer but the nationality of the people playing soccer. If you are one of those people, do yourself a favor and look up the definition of the word "intrinsic". So in this case pinoys or pinays go into China attempting to smuggle drugs and are caught. The laws should apply to people based on action or non-action. Not based on race. To hope for an outcome on those grounds is racism. Noynoy is in effect praying for racism. If he told you to pray for an unjust law that would be one thing. But he is telling you to pray that the law of another country not be applied to violators who happen to be Pinoy. If you love your country then you want your country men to behave as well as possible. Not to avoid punishment when they do not.

Samuel Johnson said Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel . Based on the article below how can this NOT apply to Noynoy.
This Prayer Vigil encourages entitlement. It does not encourage accountability or even contemplation. Which pretty much sums up Noynoy.

One Person Wants To Make Dancing With The Stars About Race And Not Dancing

Prejudice : a baseless and usually negative attitude toward members of a group. Common features of prejudice include negative feelings, stereotyped beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against members of the group.

http://psychology.about.com/od/pindex/g/prejudice.htm

Racism
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

Mike Silver is a writer who has covered the NFL for many years, mostly with Sports Illustrated. You just have to read him once or twice to know that he went to the University of California. Cal just happens to be the university of Natalie Coughlin as well. Now that you know that, it is easy to see why a guy whose day job it is to cover the brutal world of NFL football will help a fellow alum write this book about the brutal world of competitive swimming. I happen to subscribe to Mr.Silver's Tweets. I was a bit startled when I saw his Tweet in Tagalog. For those of you who do not read Tagalog it says :

Let's vote for Natalie Coughlin the Filipina contestant in Dancing With The Stars.

The tweet originated from http://twitter.com/sheilamagno . I have said many times in my blog that it is that irrational, baseless, emotional thinking that gets Erap, Willie Revillame , Richard Gomez, Noli Decastro, Vic Sotto , Noynoy etc running for public office and in some cases winning. It has nothing to do with skill in the political arena but with emotional connection. Let's examine the pleas of ( http://twitter.com/sheilamagno ) . She wants people who will care to listen to vote for Natalie solely on the fact that she perceives her as having the same blood. It has nothing to do with dancing. The fact that she writes it in Tagalog limits her audience to mostly Filipinos. We don't know how well Natalie dances or interacts with her dance partner. Sheila does not care how good or bad the rest of the competitors are. As far as she is concerned only Natalie shares her blood (apparently one grand parent is Filipino). That emotional connection means the rest of the field does not matter. Don't know about you but the criteria for voting is "baseless". I really thought Dancing With The Stars was about dancing and not so called nationality. For me it is possible to discriminate against a group just because you have a "baseless" preference to the one person because of an unrelated trait. I am all for people to pick who they want. But to tell other people to pick their choice in a dancing contest and only their choice on the criteria of 1/4 Filipino blood to me totally goes against the word competition. I want to give Sheila Magno a dictionary and read the definition of the word competition. A test of skill or ability; a contest. (http://www.answers.com/topic/competition) Q: What skill or ability does Sheila Magno want you to base your dancing vote on? A: 1/4 Filipino blood If I had to sum up that logic I would state " stereotyped beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against members of the group." Ask yourself if this person is campaigning on criteria other than those intended? Is her criteria based on race? Not sure about you but in my world applying race as the predominant reason to judge a contest intended on testing skill is RACISM.
