One of the reasons why I am into this story a bit more than I should be is because I am getting deja vu. The story below happened in my college (Simon Fraser University) about three years after I graduated. Of course a lot of women's group sided with the alleged victim. Just because she was a woman. The facts seemed to have little bearing. Most rape/ assault victims would crawl into a mouse hole if they could. I remember Rachel having a website in 1997 when websites were so exotic . In it she would insist that she could be both the injured party and sexy at the same time. Of course later on it was discovered she was not the stalkee but the stalker. The last part is too funny that you will swear I made it up. She was hired by Fox News.

Just like the on campus feminists that defended Rachel Marsden only for her gender and not anything else (like maybe her actions and behavioral tendencies) , these local feminists are blaming bigger forces then the feminist movement for making everything wrong and allowing injustice to prevail. There is nothing wrong with fighting for a cause as long as the foundation of action is based on conviction on the truth and not misapplied symbolism. The phrase undeserved sympathy comes to mind.

Timing is Kind of Weird Isnt it?

I think it was just last week I wrote an entry basically saying no one really cares about soccer in North America. Which is why this article really caught me off guard. . In a time when every article you hear and read talks about financial hardship then you have a North American city forking out money for a sports franchise in what amounts to the 5th most popular team sport in America .
Some of you may know that this is the same city I have lived in for about 95% of the 80's and 90's so I know something about the city. It might shock you to know that I also know something about pro soccer.
Back in my high school days, the Whitecaps were huge. It was not unusual for me to take the bus to the Pacific Coliseum, Empire Stadium or Nat Bailey by myself from money earned from delivering papers and buy a ticket at the window and watch a game. CFL Football, NASL soccer, AAA Baseball and NHL Hockey . That's what we had. Then MLB baseball, NFL football, NCAA football and NBA basketball on TV , I really wonder when did I have time to pass my classes.

It may not be the same tradition as the NFL has in Green Bay but it's a soccer tradition better than almost anywhere in North America.
Still having only found this out tonight I wonder why they think this will fly. In this time when even the mighty NFL is cutting back on their workers and even the grand old institution known as NFL films. Soccer will expand?? People are cutting back on spending on luxuries and even necessities and soccer will expand? No one cares if Beckham stays or goes and soccer will expand? Well they the league and the Vancouver ownership committee have faith and courage so good luck to them. They will need it.

VANCOUVER — It was 43 years ago this month that the London Evening Standard published a Maureen Cleave interview with John Lennon, in which the musician declared the Beatles “more popular than Jesus.” A heavy statement, no doubt, but one that when taken in context proved true at the time.

A longtime fan of the Fab Four, Vancouver Whitecaps co-owner Jeff Mallett may or may not have known about the anniversary prior to Wednesday’s press conference to announce that Vancouver would be home to a Major League Soccer franchise, starting in 2011.

Either way, it didn’t stop the former Yahoo chief executive officer from comparing the Whitecaps’ all-star cast of owners to one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time.

Sure, it’s a bit of an exaggeration — with Mallett and Co. a few albums shy of the billion records the Beatles have sold — but considering the excitement of the day, the analogy was forgivable. Also pretty funny, especially Mallett’s self-deprecating reference to himself as the Ringo of the four-man ownership group that also includes Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo and Steve Nash.

The owners paid MLS a $35-million franchise fee. That’s down from the original price of $40 million, but higher than the $30 million the Seattle Sounders doled out two years ago. Toronto FC, which joined North America’s premier soccer loop in 2007, paid $10 million.

“Greg’s sort of our John Lennon; he’s the quiet genius in the group — always has a vision, always remains a big believer in what is possible,” Mallett said to a chorus of laughter.

“Steve Luczo, who I don’t think anyone in the room has had a chance to meet, he’s sort of our George Harrison. You don’t necessarily see him there, but if he’s not, it’s not a band.

“And Steve Nash, who was texting me like a little kid last night saying ‘Is it done yet? Are we there? Is it going to happen?’ . . . Steve is sort of the Paul McCartney, he’s the cool one in the group.

“That leaves Ringo for me, which is the steady drum beat in the back.”

Kerfoot, who has owned the Whitecaps for the past six years, is an enigma of sorts. The Vancouver native shies away from any public exposure and wasn’t even at the well-attended morning announcement at the Westin Bayshore. Mallett and Nash joined the fray in July, while Luczo got on board just prior to the October deadline for expansion bids to be submitted to the league.

Mallett, a former national team player, is an icon of the Internet technology boom that lit up stock markets from the mid-to-late 1990s. The North Vancouver native was one of the first 12 employees at Yahoo! Inc. and helped transform the fledgling company into a billion-dollar business with 4,000 workers before he left in 2002. His personal worth was estimated to be $142 million in 2002, but just as important are his business connections and understanding of professional sports. The 43-year-old is well known to the MLS and is also a part-owner of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants.

Luczo is chairman of Seagate Technology, the world’s largest hard-drive manufacturer, and a man who moves in interesting circles. He’s part of a Silicon Valley group that owns about one-third of the Boston Celtics, and he also owns a large chunk of the National Lacrosse League’s San Jose Stealth. Luczo, who was not at the announcement, surfs, snowboards and mountain bikes and is a songwriter and co-founder of a music company that develops San Francisco artists.

Nash needs no introduction. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player lists soccer as his first love and brings a global identity to the club. He and Mallett are co-owners of the Women’s Professional Soccer League, which enters its first season of play later this month.

While Vancouver’s bid outshone those of the four remaining cities — the Whitecaps’ soccer history, commitment to growing the game and soccer infrastructure was second to none — the team’s ownership group was just as important to the MLS when making its decision.

“They love the game and represent a new breed of ownership,” said MLS commissioner Don Garber. “It’s a very passionate soccer market and an ownership group that gets the game.”

Not to be forgotten is the band’s manager.

Playing the part of Brian Epstein is Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi, who has worked tirelessly on behalf of his employers to make their MLS dream a reality.

Lenarduzzi was left to explain why the Whitecaps name was left off of the team’s MLS logos, which was displayed prominently throughout the room. There’s a chance the club could go with a different name for 2011.

“There is a lot of things we need to make decisions on,” said Lenarduzzi, who is a big proponent of keeping the historic moniker. “The Whitecaps name has a lot of equity. There may be people out there that think it may need to be something other than that.”

Like sponsors, perhaps.

Season tickets for the 2011 season will be capped at 16,500, and Lenarduzzi said the team expects to sell out based on similar scenarios in Toronto and Seattle.

The defending United Soccer Leagues First Division Whitecaps will move from Swangard Stadium to a renovated BC Place in 2011. The planned improvements include new seating, concessions, restrooms, a new artificial turf playing surface and the first retractable roof among MLS teams.

Bracketology is the process of predicting the field of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, named as such because it is commonly used to fill in tournament brackets for the postseason. Process
Using the NCAA basketball tournament selection process, the RPI, and the seeding and balancing process, a "bracketologist" places teams in the tournament in the various regions (East, West, Midwest, and South). Some bracketologists go as far as placing teams in which "pods" they will play in the first and second rounds.[2] Generally, the lists also show the last four teams in and the first four teams out. However, these brackets change daily as conference tournaments continue and teams automatically qualify for the tournament.

A bracketologist's credibility is judged on how many teams he predicts correctly being in the tournament and the average difference between the bracketologist's projected seed and the actual seed assigned by the NCAA Selection Committee. The difference between projected matchups and the differences between the "pods" selected in the first and second rounds are less important.

Motivations
There are many motivations for a bracketologist.[citation needed] For Lunardi, he was already gathering statistics and information in his role as Sports Information Director for Saint Joseph's University and editor of the Blue Ribbon Yearbook on men's college basketball, so it was not much more effort to predict the brackets. Others are motivated at perceived flaws in other bracketologist's predictions, such as putting too much (or too little) emphasis in the RPI, favoring lesser or major conferences, or failing to consider factors such as performance in the last few games.

There's a Light at The End of The Tunnel

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. My adversary for the last two years will be taking their attention seeking act elsewhere. The date I have of his/her last day is March 23. The countdown has begun. Of course in the wake of all this optimism and euphoria there is the minute chance that the replacement could be even more boisterous and obnoxious but somehow I doubt it.

That's because the guards describe my friend in the vernacular "alam mo para siya yung ari". ( you know the one who thinks she/ he owns the place) . Anyway as part of the countdown I am publishing the letter that lead to my physical exodus from the third floor. I sent this letter to my boss word for word . I reexamined what I wrote (Oct 31 2008) and nowhere do I mention this person's name. Maybe because I felt that it is so obvious who we are talking about anyway. I wrote the letter below for the same reason I wrote the letter June 2 /2008. It was the step before I would have turned into Howard Beale from Network. Or D-Fens from Falling Down . Well you know the result of this letter , I was encouraged to change floors. I was also told that Maria Ophelia Osmena (not her real name) or MOO for short was not bothering anybody but me. My superiors knew of all the behavior I documented but in the words of Bruce Springsteen "stood back and let it all be". I was told that they asked everybody in the room one by one and nobody had anything against this kind of behavior. Whether it was made up or not , I thought why be around people with such disparate values? Why be around people that tolerate foul language? Why be around one who constantly believes that their every thought must be shared with an unwilling audience? Why give credence to an attention seeking missile? The building guards agree with me and the building staff saw it fit to draw my superiors attention to her behavior but for my office neighbors its OK? Anyway March 23rd, 2009. Mark it down in your calendar. It will be like an invading army deserting a country it no longer wants. Before that fateful day I will try to post an unsent letter that again paints the picture of misery that MOO painted. Events not mentioned yet. In the meantime, I pray her ultimate destination , does not smarten up between now and then. As much as I rejoice in this breaking news, I hope she is not coming to a workplace near you. Ed

Subject: I Need To Talk To You Sometime next week. At your convenience. Subject is I do not regret at all writing that letter I did concerning swearing in this office. (June 2) All by one person who refuses to be subtle and / or gentle in anything she does. Nothing has changed. It was true when I wrote it and it's true now. I reread it and considering her swearing tirade this week and her hyper behavior I don't regret saying a word there because Percom Sales area is treated like a Friday night chika session hosted during office hours Monday to Friday . I was wrong in my method then (June 2) but the record shows I tried once using normal channels. If it will help with XXX , XXX or XXX there fine because I have points to air out. Incidents that I am not inventing. I intend to make the case to you of real events and why I believe they don't belong in the office . Maybe I am the only one vocal enough to express my grievance but so be it. I sent the original mail June 2. Precisely July 2, I started documenting her resumed swearing so in case I came close to the breaking point I have something to justify a complaint with. I was at that breaking point July 11 but you seem so harassed that approaching you was counter productive. Not only has the swearing continued but she has expanded her vocabulary. I am thankful no one here is following her lead. This week specially yesterday and today she is just so loud and gregarious. I still do not see anything in my original letter that is not worse as of my writing of this letter. She truly has no manners. I will gladly back up that claim. Today is non stop yelling like a playground . And as weird as it may sound that intensity increases at noon and at 5:30 . So I am just so eager to get out of here during lunch and dismissal. BTW about 3 weeks ago XXX at lunch asked me about this situation and I told him the truth, swearing is there and has never left. I told him if it ever came down to it , you would be the only one to know. Anyway I feel we have to talk. Thanks, Ed
