He is not talking about the Philippines specifically but he might as well be. A sitcom makes a joke they spend 20 seconds thinking about then all the so called patriotic pinoys are up in arms. And my stance on this is the same all along. Go ahead and get full of piss and vinegar if it makes you forget all the sins within our shores. For you the enemy is always external. Look within.

I love Colin because he explains things that go beyond what is in front of him. He talks about people that listen and react. The fact they are listening in the first place proves he is relevant. How many pinoys knew who Chip Tsao was ? Now he should not have said that? Thinking is not fashionable among the Pinoys that do all these gut reactions because very seldom do they voluntarily subject themselves to people who do think. Look at what passes for popular among the hardcore pinoys and seldom is there anything remotely cerebral.Eat Bulaga WowWowWee , telenovelas etc. So when there is an issue do you think they even think of thinking?? I thought so.

We get the Michael Bay type movies simultaneously as the U.S. but something like Slumdog Millionaire has to win an Oscar before they schedule it here. And it's not exactly the upper end in terms of a thinking movie. Still refreshing in terms of its style and pace compared to the blockbusters. As an audience we have to be told something is good by the label "Oscar Winner" before they can even schedule. Who will you blame the distributors or the movie going public? All I can say to that is no one puts a gun to the head of our people to watch Tito Vic and Joey. We know what rates here. We know the comprehension level here. So do our politicians. That's why what could be seen as insulting to people who can think is seen as gospel truth by people who are not used to thinking. I would like to end my rant with apologies to Randy Newman.

Children's Story: The Elephant and the Stake

In India, elephants are often used by loggers to drive logs down the river. However, elephants are enormous, so they have to catch them when they are only baby elephants.

One time, there was a baby elephant who fell into a big elephant trap. Then he was sold to a loggers camp.

This is not to say that the loggers were mean to the baby elephant, because they fed him every day and washed him. The mahout, or elephant driver who would ride his back when he got bigger, was always nice to him, but the baby elephant missed his mother and father very much.

So that the baby elephant couldn't run away into the jungle again, the driver tied his leg to a little stake in the ground every night. Of course, he could have pulled the stake right out of the ground, since he was an elephant, but he thought that he couldn't do it. So he couldn't do it. In this way, loggers in India make adult elephants think that they can't escape by tying their legs to little stakes in the ground when they are only babies.

One day, a mouse heard the baby elephant crying."Why are you crying?" the mouse asked him.

The baby elephant wailed: "I have been separated from my mother and my father. I know that I'm never going to see them again!"

"But why?" asked the mouse. "You're an elephant. You're the biggest animal in the jungle. If you pull your leg, you will pull that stake right out of the ground. Then you'll be free."

But the baby elephant didn't believe the mouse: he didn't think that he could pull the stake out of the ground, so he couldn't do it.

When the elephant told the mouse that he couldn't do it, the mouse shrugged his shoulders and said: "Then I don't care. It's you business, not mine."

A few days later, the baby elephant saw the mouse again. There were two peanuts just out of the elephant's reach, and the mouse had one peanut in his paws. When he saw the baby elephant, the mouse cried out with surprise: "I don't believe it! How come you're still not free?"

But the baby elephant shook his head and replied: "I can't do it. It's too hard."

"You have to believe in yourself," said the mouse. "If I doubted myself like you, the snakes would eat me for sure. It's dangerous to be a mouse, you know..."

The baby elephant was about to ask the mouse to push the second peanut towards him, so that he might take it in his trunk, but the mouse snatched it greedily and ran away with it.

One day, there was a fire in the loggers camp. The fire was soon out of control. Both the loggers and the elephants ran around in a panic, but the mouse wanted to try to help the baby elephant. "Run!" shouted the mouse. "Otherwise, it's all over you!"

But the baby elephant just stood there, still tied to the stake in the ground.

"Please don't give up," pleaded the mouse. "If you will only pull your leg, then you'll pull the stake out of the ground and you'll be free. But you must hurry."

When he saw the other elephants running, when he saw the fire, the baby elephant pulled the stake out of the ground. Then he ran into the jungle, where he found his mother and his father still living in the wild.

Moral: If you believe, you can do it, but you first must convince yourself in your own mind.

In Defence of Carrie Underwood

If you have not heard by now, Carrie got to trouble yesterday by making a comment at the Country Music Awards. It was a spontaneous thing. It was live TV. The ammo is live. Matthew McConaughey said something that was not exactly wholesome and he never got criticism for it. Carrie makes an on the spot quip and she gets crucified. Maybe because she is a woman??


See? There is a reason why people fear public speaking more than they fear death. Because this can happen. I have a lot of public stories, some I really try to forget. As a reward to my few loyal readers here , you can see and hear the mistakes I made.

First video. A promo for education in Canada. Whoever decided to put me to promote education has got to have serious reeducation coming their way. In that interview I talk about a snowfall. But because its spontaneous and I always have this voice in my head to slow my speech down, sometimes the facts get trampled on. I meant to say the snowfall of Valentines Day 1990 not 2000. Off by a whole decade.


Second Video - very early in you hear Yvette give Ricky permission to fire away with questions like I was a Filipino Louis Rukeyser. She gave the dreaded phrase " Feel Free To ask Any Questions. " So early on the seed for my destruction was planted.
I remember very clearly the first time they asked me to go on. My exact answer was "How could I possibly tell you anything of value?". Eventually I got on anyway only because I said the same thing everybody else was saying but differently. They usually prep anyway which gave me the chance to ask the few friends I did have to tell me what they would say. Then I tried to make it my own. Later on you can see Ricky deviates from the script. Asks me about the stock GEI which I may have known nothing about the moment he asked that question. This was almost nine years ago. Or maybe I just said what I knew for sure at the same time hedged my bets. Maybe I should have been a politician.


Even though the second video was taken nine years ago, see how little we progressed. We were talking about hostages and ransoms back then but you would think it was this week's news. Nice segue from Carrie Underwood and getting lucky huh?

Take Me Out To The Ball Game

Major League Baseball is back. Good news is even here in basketball myopic Philippines we get baseball on TV. The bad news is 95 % of the time they show those steroid obsessed New York Yankees. People who cheer for the Yankees are the same people who cheer for the hot knife when it plays butter.

If you recall a previous post I did. Sometimes just asking questions is a more effective learning tool. Every time you are excited over a sequel or a cliff hanger it's always because there are questions that are unanswered in your brain that are unanswered.

Some of the questions this season I am looking forward to seeing answered this year off the top of my head?:

• Will the Mets acquisition of solid 8th and 9th inning guys be enough to avoid the late season collapses that plagued them the previous years? They already have ace Santana.
  
• How do the Orioles and Blue Jays feel every time people bring up the intense "three" way race in the AL East? Will that snub propel them to be factors where people are only considering the Yankees, Red Sox and Tampa Bay as occupants of the division?
• Speaking of those pesky Rays. Everything I heard last year hinted that Joe Maddon's boys are supposed to come into their own this year.Meaning what we saw last year in the World Series was not even the finished product. Then why are many picking them to finish as a Wild Card or out of the playoffs? Yankees spend a lot of money but on chem lab experiments.
  
• Ever heard of Hanley Ramirez? Some people think he is the most talented player in baseball.
  
• Is this the year the Moneyball A's catch up with the perennial division winner Angels in the AL West? The good news is that the A's have players you would recognize. the bad news, they all hit their primes about 5 years ago.
  
• A lot of analysts I listen to pick my Cincinnati Reds to surprise some people. It's talk like that , that makes me nervous. Will they tease us till the All Star Break before the wheels the come like we are used to the last few years.
  
• Is it third time lucky for Lou Pinella's boys the Cubs? Or are is the weight of the 101 year old curse too much to bear?
  
• Everybody assumes that super brat Manny Ramirez is all the Dodgers need to cement the NL West. But pitching is more crucial and it seems like the Giants have the advantage there. Will it be enough to reverse the "foregone conclusion"?

D.A.: Woman stole from Toys for Tots
9:49 AM | April 2, 2009

Badbad A 73-year-old woman in San Ysidro has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than 11,000 toys over several years from the Toys for Tots program and selling them, the San Diego County district attorney’s office said today.

Virginia Kelly was a longtime foster mother and president of the Latino Foster Parents Assn. Welfare officials have removed the foster children from her home.

“Stealing from a charity and depriving needy children in San Diego of the chance to get a new toy is despicable,” Dist. Atty. Bonnie Dumanis said.

Kelly was arrested Wednesday and is set to be arraigned on charges of grand theft and embezzlement in San Diego Superior Court today. If convicted, Dumanis said, Kelly could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.

Sometimes, if asked the proper questions, you will get all the answers you need.

All of you who are judge, jury , executioner:

• Did you read his piece? or did you base your wrath solely on the "nation of servants" phrase? (Its in green below)
• What kind of writer is he? I mean niche (what audience does he serve? example Dan Wetzel writes about U.S. Sports) not whatever vile adjective you may have for him.
• If the phrase nations of servants is offensive to the point that you feel it's untrue would you rather all Pinoy domestic workers in Hong Kong quit and come back to the Philippines and find work with more dignity in our own shores??
• Would you wish for the sudden lack of income going into the Philippines if all the pinay maids there quit?
• You ever hear the phrase "The Dog Wags his tail" ?? The tail does not wag the dog.
• Let's say he really believes The Philippines is a servant to mainland China. Go ahead, refute him. What nation is the servant of the Philippines?
• Are you his intended audience??? Do our local writers write with Hong Kong/ Mainland Chinese perspective in mind?
• Does your household employ servants? What nationality are they? Are they Chinese ?
• What was the tone of the WHOLE article he wrote? Is it worth sharpening your bolo ?

• It is very well put by the writer for filipino voices below. ( http://filipinovoices.com/in-praise-of-chip-tsao) Do you know what the phrase tongue in cheek means? Do you always tongue in cheek narrative so seriously?

• Are you aware of the concept of satire? Can you point to local satire writers who have wit superior to Mr. Tsao?

I did not do any knee jerk reaction because I have seen the Pinoy wounded national spirit many times before. As the song above says "They say Knowledge makes you free". Well learn a bit about perspective before putting someone in front of the firing squad.

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen on board. We can live with that—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That’s no big problem—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout "China, Madam/Sir" loudly whenever they hear the word "Spratly." They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, "Long live Chairman Mao!" at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being.

In Praise of Chip Tsao

I don’t see why my good friend Manolo Quezon should find himself apologizing to Reyna Elena for correctly appreciating the literary and journalistic nature of Chip Tsao to begin with. (He apologizes for something else but it’s actually beside the point.) The recent satirical piece on the Spratley Islands brouhaha between China and the Philippines by Chip Tsao in his Politically Incorrect column for Hong Kong Magazine, has "sparked outrage" according to one broadsheet’s headline in part for labelling the Filipinos "a nation of servants." Strangely enough most of those calling for Chip Tsao’s head on a platter, don’t seem to mind it very much when one of their countrymen calls their OFWs "Toilet Bowl Cleaners of the World." At least Chip Tsao has an outrageous sense of humor that is so in one’s face quite a number seem clueless as to its presence…

Manolo also points to Ms. Connie Veneracion’s "lack of affection" for Mr. Chip Tsao:

The Spratly article is not the first time he’s taken a swipe at Filipino women either — see this. Now, I don’t like dignifying bad taste with indignation. Writings like his probably generate enough controversy to sell newspapers and books, it ain’t my style but I don’t have to do what so many others have done in similar cases (Malu Fernandez, Desperate Housewives and Henry Enfield). My interest in Chip Tsao, his style and his article is to point out that low class and tacky journalism is not peculiar to the Philippines. It’s everywhere.

This got me really curious about what the hubbub is all about with Chip Tsao. So I followed Connie’s link. I’m glad I did. Here is an excerpt from the piece in which Connie Veneracion says that Chip Tsao takes a swipe at Filipina women, from last October, which is actually about the very serious melamine contamination crisis in Chinese milk products last year.

Inspired by the poisoned milk powder scandal, a friend of mine is planning to import a wet nurse from the Philippines. His wife has just given birth to a baby, and he is, most justifiably, extremely worried about anything made in China…But why from the Philippines? Why not recruit a wet nurse from China? I asked my friend who until recently had whole-heartedly loved his motherland. "No," he explained, "How can you be sure that a Chinese wet nurse is not going to be fake, with something like a Bangkok ladyboy-style plastic bag filled with artificial milk made from poisoned powder?"

So allowing Hong Kong families to import Filipina wet nurses would be an innovation. And not only for babies. What else would be as impressive as a status symbol than when you are visiting a billionaire for lunch and you and dozens of other refined guests are offered a glass of fresh milk to toast everybody’s health, instead of a glass of Chateau Rotschild Lafitte? You would be told that the troop of in-house wet nurses all hail from remote villages in Luzon or Mindanao, instead of the polluted city of Manila, transported to Hong Kong only minutes after they gave birth to their babies, jetfresh, to guarantee the best vintage. So, loosen whatever restrictions and bring them in, Sir Donald—just a thought for your policy speech as I look forward to the milk-tasting party hosted by my friend, whom I warned it would be better for legal reasons, if his wife, the madam—instead of himself, the sir—supervises the job on the spot.

Politically incorrect indeed, figuratively speaking, and full of delicious innuendo, but I think Mr. Chip Tsao is a Master at the genre called Tongue-in-Cheek, or in this case Lips-on-Teats, as he manages to make a pointed criticism of China’s food safety policies whilst delivering fulsome praise for the purity and reliability of Filipino Nurse Maid Service.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!"--I will take this literally not proverbially for the article below.

Filipinos are getting more and more equipped in using the internet. There is a necessity obviously, as millions of Filipinos are working abroad as professionals or skilled workers. Internet, aside from a more popular gadget, the mobile phone, has become a cheap medium in communicating with family members abroad. You can view your relative who's on the other side of the world in real time through webcam, and of course, it feels like you're together and the feeling of loneliness or home-sickeness if not gone is greatly diminished. This is the reason why we get news as fast as it happens though thousands of miles away. This is also the reason why when Mr. Chip Tsao published his article entitled, "The War at Home" on (http://hk-magazine.com/feature/war-home) on May 27, 2009, it was pulled out on the same day because it only took a couple of hours to enrage a whole nation, the nation which he called "the nation of servants", Philippines no less.

So what did he say that sparked indignation from my fellow Filipinos, migrant workers or not; in Hong Kong, in the Philippines, or in other parts of the world? Since the editor and the publisher of the online magazine withdrew the article; I researched some more to get the article. I was so sure a Filipino would post it somewhere. I was right, so here it is. Here's what Mr. Chip Tsao wrote. I ask, "is he really just being satirical?" You tell me cos this nation of servants may have misunderstood his use of a literary device.

Our Long National Nightmare is Over

It is a magical day. It would be more magical if I was suffering more but I am not because I got moved up one floor from "ground zero". We are finally at the end of the tunnel. The guards at the smoking area of the building are rejoicing.

I asked my mole in accounting and she told me Maria Ophelia Ojeda (not her real name) is really gone. (Van Morrison) I went to my old section of the office. The place I vacated to get away from M.O.O . and her hot air. I went to the one guy who had been at his section longer than I was . I just said two words "Planning Session". He laughed and he said "forever". "Planning Session" was my Secret Service code name for M.O.O. because the times she was not in the office it was so quiet it sounded like her entire department was off on their annual planning session. I could have made this entry yesterday during her last day but I am like the apostle Thomas who famously said:

'Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it"

I had to see before I really believed she was gone. In the words of Foreigner "This heart of mine has been hurt before, this time I want to be sure." So the long national nightmare is over for us in this building. The smoking section will be a lot less quieter. A lot less obnoxious. And there will be somebody out there, who will get the chance to build up as much resentment as I did . Whatever place of work M.O.O. lands in.Please download the sound clip below.
