Beauty, Necessity and Reason for Failure

Beauty, Necessity and Reason for Failure

I keep telling all of you to subscribe and listen to Colin Cowherd for free. Regardless of your interest or disinterest in sports. Even if he is indeed a sports talk show host.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/show?showId=theherd

Because Colin when he wants to make a point will always make an analogy to life. Like a - this is how it is- example. He just has a gift for making a point. Just listen to the 7 minutes I provided in the attachment section below or here if you are not on multiply.

Thomas Edison went through failure because for him it was learning what DID NOT WORK.

Failure is there for many reasons. Motivation to succeed is one. Motivation to even try. De-motivation to fight the human tendency to coast. We learn from our mistakes. How can we truly learn if they are never identified as mistakes?

You have to go through struggle. As much as I do not want to struggle or be put in positions where there is doubt and pain. That is why I thought of the story I was told about the struggle to get out of the cocoon. You may read it at the bottom of the post.

There was one day in college I thought I was having a particularly bad day. Just one thing after another that could have been better. Back then I drove a Chrysler New Yorker 79. Huge car. My school (www.sfu.ca) was up on a hill ( as in the song Aja) and it was bit of a drive down. Well that night my car choked. It lost all power. Had I been having a normal day maybe I would have panicked at this sudden intrusion of adversity. But at that point I was so besieged that I was calmer. I had no steering, no power brakes and was going too fast down hill to resort to the emergency brake. Looking back on it, I had two things going for me: 1) no traffic ahead of me 2) I was going down the straight path not down the spiral path. I ended up slowing down by switching the transmission to "2" then "1" then the parking brake. Only now, nineteen years later do I appreciate what truly happened. But adversity and struggle helped.

Failure is good if we deserve it. Failure tells us where we are at. We have choices when confronted with failure.

*******************************************

Off the top of my head from the Tom Hopkins Academy of Champions. ( It's been years since I read it)

  • I never see failure as failure but as an opportunity to improve my sense of humor
  • I never see failure as failure but only as a learning experience
  • I never see failure as failure but a chance to improve my technique and perfect my performance
  • I never see failure as failure but a chance to change course in my direction.
  • I never see failure as failure because its the game I must play to win.

See how I did:

***********************************************

I knew of some people ( in college) whose automatic answer to the question what is the score when we were playing sports was "tie". No winners and no losers. What is that? That's Marxism is what it is.

Failure is there for a reason. The cliche says the only way not to fail is not do anything. Anybody who has ever broken ground in anything had to go through failure.

COCOON STRUGGLE (posted 05/10/03)

Shared by:

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force it’s body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther.

Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happen!!! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of it’s life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggles required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were nature’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into it’s wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved it’s freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggle are exactly what we need in our life. If nature allowed us to go through life without obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.

And we could never fly…

The Difference between Obama and Mao?

What is the difference between Mao Zedong and Barack Obama?

Social Networking Has Closed Gap Between Genders - Audio Blog

I have already discussed a lot of what I think of social networking. I provide the links below. I ran across an interesting idea by Colin Cowherd about online applications minimizing the male/ female gulf. I won't do an injustice by quoting it. Listen to it , the way I heard it. Only in the Multiply version of the post. I will tell you he agrees with Tom Hanks from League of Our Own. There should be no crying in football.

You Mean The Sports World Does Not Revolve Around Manny?

Please double click the picture to get a better view.

It is 7 AM Manila time Tuesday morning. Yahoo sports shows no evidence on their headline page that the Cotto Manny fight ever happened. Go to the boxing page it is there of course. Boxing is not what it once was. Other sports have eclipsed it for attention. But it holds its place here because it means perceived attention for those who crave it. So while the Philippines will bask in the afterglow for another three months, the sports world has moved on. Bill Belichick's 4th down play is talked about. Iverson has decided to fly the coup. NASCAR has a championship. The college bowl picture is starting to shape up. Speculation on who will replace Charlie Weis, never mind that he is not actually fired.

If I am speaking Greek right now because this is Sports Talk. Something I always enjoyed. In places where the outcome of a Manny bout does not define their self esteem, the results fade from relevancy very quickly.

My point is there is a difference between sports fans and those just craving for some sort of international attention. Over here , the grocery stops with the workers looking at the TV when fight is on. I should have shoplifted some cookies. My grandmother is curious about result. She says she hates sports so this thing transcends it. In other words: bandwagon jumping.

Bottom line: You have nothing to do with Manny's victory. He will not share his money with you. The sports world 32 hours after it happened does not care.

The sports world has moved on. Not in the Philippines.

What A Way To Spend Six Years

http://www.long-mcquade.com/

Worked here from July 1988 to July 1994. Will never forget it. I was already a music and sports nerd before I worked there, I got worse when worked there. I used to like the Toronto Maple Leafs kind of before I worked there. Because it's the same way I like the Red Sox now. Because they are the chief rival of the team I hated it either sport . (Montreal in hockey and Yankees in baseball) But I learned to hate the Leafs working in the store where there were so many Leafs fan who lived and died with every game. And they of course hated the Vancouver Canucks the same way a die hard veteran Chicago Bears fan would look down on a Carolina Panthers fan. Which makes perfect sense in the world of a sports fan.

In my six years there, 5 1/2 of those years we would be 19 people in the store all male. Which may explain my warped sense of humor to this day.

There are many stories involving pizza, music , cappuccinos, two VCRs, box moving, celebs, Friday nights, repossessions , the legal system, Hal Lovo entertaining the troops and others but maybe best left for another time.

I rediscovered this video that shows you the show floor of the store as I remember it. With Wayne the Bass God. A guy who loved flashing the "Evil" hand sign even at a jazz show. Indulge me in another sentimental video.

Adding Insult to Injury And Death

OK Obama apologists. Here is your chance. Explain the logic here. Obama thinks it's a great idea to bring terrorists accused of the 911 Terrorists acts to the exact place where their alleged plotting and scheming manifested itself. Research all you want and don't rely on me alone. Listen to Dennis Miller's thoughts on this included in the Multiply version of this post.

The Filipino Cry For Attention

Is it too much to expect people to be color blind when it comes to international competition??

The whole wide world
An endless universe
Yet we keep looking through
The eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people
But we feed the machines
Can't really feel
What international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
In different circles, we keep spinning round and round

Territories by Rush from the album Power Windows.

On the eve of another Sunday where everything stop stills here in the Philippines I have to say this.

If you read this previous entry I made, this entry is more or less the same thing.

http://cornholiogogs.multiply.com/journal/item/951/One_Person_Wants_To_Make_Dancing_With_The_Stars_About_Race_And_Not_Dancing

That email below about making everybody vote on CNN for their 2009 Heroes Contest. As usual I am disturbed by the overt racism by all the people that support this myopic campaign because they ignore everybody else in the voting on lines of RACE. What they are saying is not only is any non Filipino not only does not deserve your vote. We won't even tell you what they did or who they are. Just vote in terms of who is brown. I know it sounds stupid but that is exactly why I call people out on it.

I have nothing against Efren Penaflorida. I wish we had more people with his heart and compassion running this country as opposed to the opportunistic egomaniacs that are doing it right now. It's just the vote should be about what he does against what the others does and not where they are born.

Some worthy Heroes from that contest who are not Filipino but are worthy of at least your attention if not your vote, all things being equal:

  • Youth Becoming Healthy teaches middle schoolers about exercise and nutrition
  • The organization has helped about 4,000 children since 2004
  • Do you know a hero? Nominations are open at CNN.com/Heroes

Pam Koner
  • Pam Koner's nonprofit connects sponsor and recipient families
  • Family-to-Family has provided nearly 800,000 meals to those in need
  • Families also connect on a social level, exchanging letters, photos, stories

Budi Soehardi
  • Budi Soehardi founded an orphanage to help children in Indonesia
  • "Mr. Budi is like my own father," one resident says
  • Soehardi and his wife harvest their own rice to sustain the orphanage's food supply

Don't these people deserve to have their stories known or even have equal opportunity to the vote even if they are not Filipino?

As usual this imperialistic prejudice stems from people who are totally insecure that they need this for validation from whatever international stage. Any contest should be about merit and not race. You tell me what the email below is promoting and who they are promoting to? Last I looked, excluding somebody from something based purely on race is discrimination and racism.

Hello everyone...This Efren Penaflorida is really a hero in the
Philippines and the world. Please read his story and vote for him. There
is no limit to the number of times you can cast your vote. We have until
Nov. 19 only to help him. Do you not think he deserves the honor? Plus
the monetary award will surely help him in his endeavor to keep on doing
what he is doing... to give the poor a chance at education and keep them
away from gangs and drugs.
We are grateful for someone like Efren. We may not be able to physically
do what he is doing but we can certainly cast a vote to help him. Please
cast your votes many times (this is allowed) and spread the news.

(Embedded image moved to file: pic08634.jpg)art.efren.
penaflorida.cnn.jpg
Each year, CNN gives $100,000 to the winner (from a field of ten
finalists---winnowed from 9,000 nominees from all over the world) of its
"Hero of the Year" award. This year, a 28-year-old Filipino, Efren
Peaflorida, made it to the top ten. (A panel of 12 well-known
personalities from various fields picked the finalists. Colin Powell was
among the judges this year). If Efren wins this year's award (based on
how many votes he gets, which will depend on us), he will be able to
expand his mobile school program for the children of the slums in the
Philippines. What this young man is doing to improve the lives of the
kids in the slums is truly inspiring.

Here's the link to Efren's story and his Dynamic Teen Company (the
organization he founded).

TO VOTE, PLEASE CLICK ON THIS LINK:
http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cnn.heroes/vote/

Voting is open between now and Nov. 19. CNN will announce the winner and
give out the award at a star-studded show on Thanksgiving night in L.A. at
the Kodiak Theater (same venue for the Oscars). So, let's all help Efren
win so that he will, in turn, be able to help more impoverished kids. The
more votes Efren gets, the greater his chances of winning the "Hero of the
Year" award and the $100K. It will take less than a minute to click a
button to cast your vote. Let's all help Efren continue to make a
difference in those slum kids' lives. Without his mobile school and his
group of volunteers, those kids will probably never have a chance to set
foot in a real school and learn their ABCs. Let's all vote for Efren!
Please don't forget to pass this on to everybody you know---Filipinos and
non-Filipinos alike----so more people can vote for this young man with an
extra big heart. Thanks!!
