I actually have a lot to post but I don't feel like it with a lot of people suffering because of yesterday's calamity. If you have a story please post it here. I will tell you mine but its nothing compared to what I have been hearing. Of course you may share stories of your own or people you know.

I had a class yesterday morning in RCBC Tower. Which is two blocks from Makati Med. I was offered free parking in the Makati Med area which I took advantage of being the cheap ass that I am and it could have ended up costing me a lot more. To be fair RCBC parking can be 105 pesos for a half day class. But that is beside the point.

When I left the house the driver looked at me with a look of puzzlement. He said to me in Ilonggo wondering if I had still had school considering the typhoon. It was actually mild at the time so I just went on my way. Office was dark when I got to the school. Classmates were there and attendance was actually not bad. Teacher was there and we had class as normal. Those of you who know me are aware of my fossil status. My teacher was working at San Miguel the year before I was born. God bless him trying to enlighten minds like mine. If there is really any to enlighten in my case.

OK, so class dismissed at normal time. At the lobby of the building there were some people who were not leaving just looking out. Rain was coming down in sheets. Coming down in a 7:30 angle (picture a clock). I stood there listening to the Scott Van Pelt show while waiting for this to let up. After about 20 minutes I went upstairs and sat in Mexi Cali or more accurately outside it. I love that place except its never open when I go to RCBC. I was going to play DS but as I sat I could hear the rain subside a bit. A portion of the throng still thought it was too much rain for them. Of course I was among them a little bit earlier.

I have been reading in Multiply the story of this guy who has to worry about his son's medical procedure and the fact that the flood has them trapped there. I just so happened to pass by that intersection because that's where the car was parked. I am telling you. You have no idea with the sidewalk is. Which turned to be really significant because I almost lost my balance when I stepped off invisible curb and it would have spelled ruins for everything I had on me: cel phone, Ipod, DS, textbook etc.

Make matters worse my car was parked underground which at that time was OK. The pedestrian underpass pictured below was not. Doughboy and I used that frequently when he was here. It was near his hotel.

Going home, I had to be
Capt.-Lt. Henrich Lehmann-Willenbrock - Der Alte A lot of people unfortunately had vehicles unlike this scene from Risky Business.

We all forgot the existence of one way streets so I got to feel what the typical jeepney driver felt like. I was so glad to get back to the neighborhood. I was lucky.

Many were not.

What part of 'beyond reasonable doubt ' do you not understand Erap related

"They say that patriotism is the last refuge
To which a scoundrel clings.
Steal a little and they throw you in jail,
Steal a lot and they make you king."
"What's a Sweetheart Like You"
Bob Dylan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht-CJTvVGmo

Main

http://www.gmanews.tv/story/60117/Erap-guilty-of-plunder-sentenced-to-reclusion-perpetua

Guilty is defined in the dictionary as "legally judged as an offender".

"Beyond Reasonable Doubt" can be loosely translated to "sure as I'm sitting here".

Forgive me for being blunt but at least I am not doing you the disservice of lying. Erap projects dumb. He sure as hell does not project Rhodes Scholar. He projects dumb because the bulk of the electorate will RESPOND to dumb and there is not much anyone who cares can do about it.

Politics is a sad game everywhere else on Earth but I think it's really depressing here. To quote George Will, voters do not decide on the issues, voters decide on the people who will decide on the issues. For me that implies that if the means are flawed then so are the ends. It's bad enough dumb is not only tolerated as far as I am concerned, it's encouraged.

You have to live here to understand what it means to have mass appeal. What you have to resort to and what response you will get. Believe me, they ain't lookin for no Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Seeking political office at any level is all about serving your community. Ideally It's all about responsibility, altruism, decision making and values. I said ideally because here in the Philippines I see very little of those traits in our politicians. OK, I confess was being very generous with the phrase "very little". But yet these sleazy politicians manage to attract their white hot supporters so energized they could vibrate themselves to another dimension. These same people enamored by the sleazy politicians are also enamored by Manny Pacquiao but that is a point I have made many many times.

I don't see how hosting a brainless noontime television show prepares you for the penultimate public post in this country. Anyone?? Nor do I see how dumb someone could possibly be that takes a presidential aspirant seriously when he was already given a chance and all he does is gets found guilty of a crime normally punishable by 40 years to life. Even a bunch of monkeys with typewriters can come up with a more intelligent plot line than that.

Want to know what is wrong with the Philippines? Our standards for an elected public official are so low. Erap, Willie , Richard Gomez, Noli Decastro, Vic Sotto and Noynoy. If I even have to explain, please don't worry. I already did. Just follow the links.

One thing new I have to say about Noynoy that I did not say last time. You want someone who is driven to the highest elected office by a burning desire to serve the country. Not because other people feel that he should fill a burning hole in our country created by his mother's death. I don't know anyone who believes he would have ran for President if his mother was very much alive. And his mother has not been president since 1992.

People should run and win based on merit, intelligence, integrity and accomplishment. Not because of last name, tv hosting jobs, cinema action roles and other shallow criteria.

A lot of people are mourning Cory because it is a backlash to the abuse of the Marcos, Erap and Gloria regimes. Which brings to mind these jokes :

At Cory’s funeral, people lined up and walked for hours to pay respects, despite the bad weather. At Gloria’s? There’s an SMS (text) joke circulating that people will line up to see her casket, but only to make sure that she’s really in it.

"Ang hirap pumunta sa burol at libing ni TITA CORY. Ang haba ng pila, siksikan, nakakatamad pumunta. Hintayin ko na lang burol ni GLORIA. Tiyak walang pila at di siksikan. Please pass hanggang umabot kay Pandak, baka makonsensya."

In English- at the wake of Cory there are long lines and people getting crammed in like sardines. You don't quite feel like going. Just wait till Gloria's funeral, for sure there will be no long lines or cramming to deal with. Please pass until it reaches the dwarf so that she may acquire a conscience.

In light of everything I said. A lot of times a revolution is a "call to arms". In our case, we will encourage true leaders to emerge and perform if we have "a call to brains".

How Does It Feel To Be A Criminal Lawyer

Jack Ford is a lawyer who has also been a TV personality for many years.

I joke a lot but I will not joke about my experience with the legal system. 1) I was a juror 2) I was a witness in a sexual harassment case. Both in British Columbia. Two of the great unwritten blogs as of now anyway.

Most of us base our perceptions about lawyers on what we see in the movies and on TV:

Well in the mp3 file provided listen to Jack Ford describe his experience in the legal profession:

What's it like to defend

What's it like to prosecute?

What's it like to send an innocent man to jail?

I thought with all misconceptions of what a lawyer does ( like lawyer jokes) that you might find this first hand account useful.

Girl You Know Its True Pop Up

Milli Vanilli told you to Blame it On The Rain,
but if you blame it on the rain tell me
what can be gained so,
if all else fails you can blame it on me.

Barenaked Ladies from the album Gordon. "Blame It On Me"

Even before the "outing" of Milli Vanilli I knew that they were not the singers. It came out in Musician magazine. You see. Dewey Finn was right. MTV truly wrecked music. Look was more important than sound. Style more important than substance.

Don't blame it on the rain. Blame it on the commercialism. Blame it on the superficial. But most of all, blame it on the gullibility of an audience that knows nothing about music. They value look and dancing over musicianship.

If anything it shows you the value of a Grammy. When people who are supposed to be in the know for what they are voting about have no clue.

Maybe the record companies have every right to just worry about moving product than to portray their artists accurately. But for me, that is why there is such a disconnect between all these fabricated acts and the real bands of yore. There was so much fluff between the creator and the audience that even the simplest audience member may like the song but will not feel that long term bonding with the artist. It's just a song.

What the kids don't understand is that it;s that the affinity that one feels with the act. That is earned with a combination of great songs and great albums that endear fans to an act. That endearment will help foster loyalty should an artist try to venture new artistic ground. That endearment will help the audience listen to the totality of an acts output and not just the hits.

Hits are for the fair-weather fan. Albums are for those acts with the talent beyond the superficial. Albums are for those fans who have discretion and take their music appreciation seriously. Listening to just the hits and only songs with video totally throws a wrench into music appreciation.

No girl, this is not true. Not the artist, not the process, not the music.

I Thought It Would Never End Willie R's "triumphant return "

WILLIE'S BACK!

Willie Revillame made his "triumphant return" to his show Wowwowee today!!!!! In an event that makes Filipinos forget about Douglas MacArthur. You know who was there?? Vicki Belo!!!!!! Why did I not go on emergency leave?? Screw protocol I should have reported to ABS CBN today. I had my sign all painted at home. "I WILL Die without U WILLie!!!!!". But once in a while you have days in your life where you say to yourself that things can not possibly get better then they do!!!!!!!!!! They hinted that Willie will run for vice president next year!!!!!!!!! Oh my Ghost of Erap!!! I am afraid someone might wake me up from all this bliss!!!!! Why was I not there to "reach out to hug and kiss him and shake his hand!!!" Please Wilie don't ever leave us again!!!!!!!!!!

MANILA – Six weeks after going on indefinite leave from the show, controversial TV host Willie Revillame returned to his top-rating noontime show “Wowowee” Monday to a grand “Will-come back” party.

Some fans and supporters and “Wowowee” staff wore red and white shirts with “We love you, Willie” and “Will-come back” messages.

When he emerged onstage, the audience cheered and applauded as they chanted his name. Revillame went around the studio to greet his supporters who reached out to hug and kiss him or even shake his hand.

Popular cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo and her daughter, Cristalle Henares, and “Bench” owner Ben Chan were also in the audience. Revillame is the celebrity endorser of Belo Medical Group and clothing line Bench.

"Sa almost two months na wala ako, lumuluha ako. Lumuluha ako, nagdurugo ang puso ko dahil hindi ko kayo kapiling. Pero lahat ng kalungkutan na iyon napawi na dahil muli ko kayong makakasama ngayong araw na ito,” he said.

He added: “Bawal na ang mainit na ulo. Pag may nagkamali palakpakan na lang natin.”

Revillame took an indefinite leave from “Wowowee” after drawing criticisms generated by his order to cut the live streaming of former president Corazon Aquino’s funeral procession last August 3.

Revillame, who is rumored to be eyeing the vice presidential post in the 2010 elections, is expected to announce his political plan before his show ends on Monday.

Lack of Humility Explained In A Three Minute Cartoon

Imagine all the conflicts that could have been avoided if the words/phrases "please", "thank you", "excuse me" and "I'm sorry" had been used
taken from
http://twitter.com/mlopezvito

I get so many ideas either looking at other people's stuff or even just talking to people and having a dialogue. Now remember I said I get ideas. I do not rip them off. I use their idea as a starting point.

I read Marty's thought above and it reminded me of this profound cartoon from that profound man Theodore Geisel. That guy was talented, brilliant , creative , original and quality. All terms that we throw around too loosely around these days. Days when reality TV and rap music reign supreme.

What is said in a three minute cartoon about compromise, consideration, win-win and self entitlement can not be understated.

I Changed The Name of The Blog Again

Not that anyone notices, not that anyone cares. But I changed the name of the main blog.

It was most recently called: I Have No Idea What I Will Post Next and Neither Will You. Because we may not have quality in this blog but I hope we can least deliver some variety.

Before that it was called Twisted Thoughts on an Already Twisted World. Where I take a crazy issue then look at it from an even crazier point of view.

Before that it was a very simple creed I hope I live by: I Hate Being Cliche. This blog will take chances and may not always connect but I hope it's never predictable.

A title I considered a while back but never used was Diary of a Madman. I know it would have been truth in advertising except that it was already taken.

How did I decide on the latest title? Heck, how do I make any decisions? Well, I will go through that process if you can indeed call it that.

It all started when a certain phrase impacted me listening to this man's radio show:

The phrase that Scott used " Misdirected though it might be" mildly struck me at the time. As you can tell, we have two things in common. First is our hair style. Secondly our default setting of using self depreciating humor.

My classmate Anna Alix

and I have something in common. We both took "sabbaticals" from our MBA studies. I would not say it's forever but reminds me a lot of this classic scene from Godfather III.

On a related aside check out the parody scene from the Sopranos. As furnished by Silvio Dante who I hear plays a mean guitar,

If the movie was as bad as some people like to say it is, then why is this scene iconic?

Anna has always been nice to me. So when she asked for my old notes for a similar course I said sure. I know my weaknesses and I know my notes and hand ins have not always been the greatest. I gave her through the magic of text messaging full and complete disclosure. It just came out "you can have my hand ins , however misguided they may be". I told her that the phrase just came out. It was a scene from Field of Dreams.

Earlier in the term I forgot what possessed me to start posting significant Field of Dreams scenes. Maybe it was that same out of nowhere urge that causes Ray Kinsella to build the ball field. It was only then did I realize that Scott Van Pelt was quoting from Field of Dreams whenever he used the phrase "Misdirected though it might be".

It was only when I was formulating strategy of how to explain the phrase over the limitations of SMS did I realize how that phrase and that scene totally summed up my effort and output in this blog. God bless any of you that take the time to read.

For all you younger folk that think that the voice who utters that phrase sounds familiar let me close off with a few scenes where you might know him from. Of course besides the guy who says "This is CNN". File of his sound bites available in the Multiply version of this post.

If You Build It ..................... Part 1A

For those of you who have been following this series this is a bit out of order. Scene 1 has the voice Scene 2 has him making the field. But the segue is too abrupt. I decided to add the scene that bridges the two.

Patrick Swayze's Last Interview

I bring you this video so you can see someone who did not cower at the face of this disease. I also give it to you because there is an anti smoking message at around the third minute. Very reminiscent of what Yul Brynner did a while back. I also would like you if you are interested in the positive message of this Barbara Walters interview to check out two earlier posts of mine. One on my retrospect of his movies and the other on the fight against cancer and what it has inspired in people. Ed

All You People Whining About Kanye West

"Melody? I don't need no stinkin' melody!"

Quote:I hate rap music, which to me sounds like a bunch of angry men shouting, possibly because the person who was supposed to provide them with a melody never showed up.[Dave Barry]

For those of you who do not know the story please click here

None of this would have happened if you as an audience did not take rap seriously. But you do and you have all these professional boasters think they own the "music" world. They just barge in on someone else's stage.

I really don't care about awards since nobody knows if Steely Dan, Randy Newman, The Alan Parsons Project or Tom Waits have ever won any so awards are irrelevant to music. Terry Bradshaw has 4 Super Bowl Rings good. Derek Jeter has 4 World Series Rings. Paul Coffey has 4 Stanley Cup Rings with two different teams. Counting is good in competitive team sport. Sports is all about the scoreboard and who is left standing at the end of the season. Sports is all about your guys and their guys, common field , common rules , common refs, common crowd and whoever is victorious at the end of that.

Music is different. Music is about you, the song, the band.Takes talent to write a song, takes talent to perform a song. Elvis helped inspire Led Zeppelin. You can hear the clip of Robert Plant wax poetic about Elvis in the Multiply version of this post. For a few years you could see Led Zeppelinin concert and/or you can see Elvis in concert. They were never in competition. They sure as hell were not packin' heat waiting to take each other out too. But Elvis and a TV with Robert Goulet in it? Different story. Kanye may be be popular but will he last? Will we look at him in forty years the same way we look at The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Elvis now? Nope, his time is now not tomorrow. That's why he can get away with stealing a stage now.

So award shows about music are flawed to begin with. There should be awards for people who matter. People like doctors who go the extra mile to improve patients, firemen, policemen, the military. People who improve lives at the expense of their own.

I have always maintained :

1.Rap music is an oxymoron.
2.What rap I heard consists of bragging , violence, misogyny, and the whole notion that to make ones self feel better the other side has to be degraded.
3.Rap music? They forgot to add the 'c'.
4.Excellent music is about:

* Band
* Songwriting
* Album

Very few of you will convince me that the third bullet will apply to rap. None of you will convince me about the first two.

Also do the reverse. If a white guy took over the stage from a visual minority female. The feminists will be up in arms, the bleeding hearts will cry racism. But not of that here. The PC police don't want you to hurt the feelings of a sensitive rapper.

You guys want him off the stage. You guys gave it to him in the first place. Rap Music is an oxymoron.

Call Me Cynical Kris Aquino Related

I just saw the headline below. First of all, let me state my bias. I truly believe that if given a chance Kris Aquino will endorse athletic supporters. There is no billboard high enuff to keep that ego restrained.

Isn't she on enough shows? Again, maybe I am cynical but even when she is on the news she is playing for the camera. Whether she is a victim of domestic violence or losing her mother, she can not seem to get enough of the spotlight. Just my perception, you are welcome to disagree with that.

Which leads us to this news item.

Most politicians don't even let you in on their fund raising. Kris has to let you in on her "sacrifice". She was probably going to sell anyway and why not even get more attention? Let it leak a sale was intended for the campaign. While attention is on big brother, ride on his coat tails.

I loved this quote:

"I can be very proud of the fact that our family was never power-hungry. "

Too bad we can't say the same of "attention hungry". Not even all of them. Just mostly the youngest.

My opinion, it's always about you Kris. It's your picture when I look up overexposed in the dictionary. Maybe I am cynical but the only way anybody got wind of this is you let them. Support your family yes but spotlight steal? That is so you.

I Wish This For The Philippines

This

Here

(click above please)

What do we get instead?

A candidate for president. Whose popularity is not affected one iota by headlines like this. Erap's desire to seek the presidency again is not news in itself but the fact that so many people take him seriously. Somebody please explain to me that this guy was found guilty of plunder. A crime punishable by death then he is taken seriously as a presidential candidate Can anybody out there convince me that as a nation we have IQ? Anybody out there convince me public education is working? Anybody out there convince me we have an informed electorate?

I will say this over and over again but I just don't get the mania over a Filipino boxer but yet those same fans love, idolize and believe this poor excuse of a human being. If I had one dream, one dream I knew would come true. I want Manny to lose every fight and be humiliated. And just maybe some people will think there is more to self worth than one boxer who can kick ass. That educating voters is a far more constructive use of one's attention. But I should wake up and not be Walter Mitty.

A Joke I heard in 1995

Michael Jackson, Tonya Harding and Lorena Bobbitt and a bunch of kids are in a plane that goes down in the middle of the ocean. They all make it to the emergency raft. Lorena accidentally drops the knife she used and it creates a hole in the raft. Lorena starts panicking crying "we got to save the kids! we got to save the kids! ". Tonya Harding responds in a grumpy tone of voice "Screw the kids!". Michael Jackson pipes in "is there enough time?"

Riding the Momentum of Death

I really dread death. More for people around me than for myself. There is nothing like being told someone is gone. I know its part of life but does not change the fact I dread when it arises. One day people will be told that I am gone. I hope by then I will leave a lot more than I am leaving now.

There is an old expression "He is so heartless he would sell tickets to his mother's funeral". Remember that statement because we will revisit it. By now my regular readers will know the major themes that I see the issues with. a) substance over style b) don't jump on the bandwagon c) what is good is good regardless of age or other factors.

Let's examine three recent high profile deaths.

1) Cory Aquino-

apparently a wave of yellow sympathy swept the nation after she succumbed to cancer. A tsunami so significant that some people are taking out their surf boards (and they are not in Zambales) and riding that wave. My initial reaction when I heard her son Noynoy was running was , the guy was a politician but not a mover and shaker They are having someone who was a mover and shaker (Mar Roxas) who has been planning for his run to the Palace a while, step aside. To make way for someone who is carried by the outpouring sympathy of a cancer victim. Maybe I am oversimplifying things but sue me when the Filipino voter is correctly accused of being sophisticated and discriminating.

I am not a crack analyst of the local scene since I find politics is seamless with ABS-CBN/ GMA show business. So it's no use paying too much attention if I want to keep my blood pressure from being capable of cooking rice.

I found some links of people whose view varies on the topic so you can get some sort of perspective.

In the case of Noynoy Aquino I can't help but suspect his run at the highest office in the land is fueled by the philosophy "Strike while metal is hot"

I read the line below and it's simply a PR line. Maybe somebody closer to the situation can see the fearlessness and the fervor. I have my doubts.

"It is in his bloodline. It is in his heritage. For him, democracy restored must be enshrined without fear but with greatest fervor."

A lot of people really respect the opinion Mr. De Quiros and I am no exception. He seems to think that Noynoy is appropriate but then again how come I get the feeling for him its any presidential offspring other than Mikey Arroyo?

Here is another Inquirer columnist who has his doubts.

2) Ted Kennedy

My friend Greg in Vegas is a very astute Twitterer. He said "Honoring someone's memory is about the worst imaginable reason to pass any law."

Yet that is what the Democrats seemed to be doing without apology before the corpse was warm. The GOP apparently not exactly hitting the high road on this either.

Honoring someone's memory is about the worst imaginable reason to pass any law.

3) Michael Jackson-

do you remember as far back as May of this year? When there was no MJ music being played wherever you went? Which was the case for almost twenty years. If this music is so great why listen to it now and not three months ago? Why does death add to the appeal? Why does death make the bandwagon more spacious, roomy and comfy? Could it be MJ music was not in fashion two years ago because it may not be as classic as some of us would like to believe?

As I mentioned before, even in my home and in my office, maids, co- workers playing MJ music like it was released yesterday. Like they are sages handing out gifts from the gods. A guy I consider a great sage Ian Faith said back in 1982 "Every movie in every cinema is about death, death sells". In the case of MJ he could not be more right. Death indeed sells regardless of multiple child molestation charges.

Also read about MJ's father Joe who seems to personify the opportunism. His shilling of his label two days after MJ's death makes him sound like he is saying "the kid is not my son."

Pedestrian Rage

Warning: those allergic to rants, please close your browser now.

This happened last Friday. Short walk from the parking lot in Corinthian to the office. Three acts of stupidity/ inconsideration. I did not do anyone any bodily harm or even curse. I just blog.

1) idiot in close quarters walking down same sidewalk lit cigarette facing ME and not him. You know. There are some people who I value who smoke. Please avert your eyes. The guy has a habit that I find disgusting and it makes up the sum total of the Surgeon General's rant that most people know. But I can safely say, his habit is perfect for him.

2) bike rider wrong way on one way street. These guys are clueless and are very likely FPJ/ Erap volunteer campaign workers. On a one way street common sense means you look at the way the traffic is coming from. Although this technique does not save you from being blindsided by morons on bikes ignoring the one way sign. But how silly of me, I am giving them credit that they have the education to read the sign. I highly recommend visually reminding them of the one way street. Just don't use the traditional pointer finger.

3) taxi driver- I am waiting for him to clear but then he slows down. So this runner up to the Surgeon General's post just screws up my narrow window to cross the street because the traffic behind him has now caught up. So it takes a lot longer to cross at that point. If any of the three was remotely my fault, it was this one. I think I was showing too much leg.

90 Million Dollars Is The Going Rate For Perspective

"And sometimes a little pain is necessary

to see and understand the true circumstances of your life."

John McAfee 2009

If you take this piece at face value John McAfee's perspective comes at a hefty material price. After watching it though I can't help but recall a quote about perspective from the magical tune-smiths Spinal Tap. I won't repeat it here but it was said in Graceland in their Smell the Glove tour (1982).

You know I love to quote Colin Cowherd and he always quotes what his dad told him. Recessions are just garage sales for the well prepared. I am just paraphrasing but you get the idea. There are people who run their companies lean and mean during the good times and when the bad times eventually come, buy up the companies that are most affected by it.

Watch the video and learn how he is taking all this. He basically held an open auction of his accumulated possessions. What that means is he is auctioning a Bentley and you and I are the only interested bidders. I bid 5 dollars and you bid 10 dollars and no one beats your bid, it's yours.

There are many things here to appreciate. Again, taking it at face value, I was touched and I was hopeful when at the end of this video, he said what his future plans were. Hope you enjoy and learn.
